At Greenlight, we believe every child should have the opportunity to become financially healthy and happy. It’s no small task, and that’s why we leap out of bed every morning to come to work. Because creating a better, brighter future for the next generation depends on it.
We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer with a background in building scalable systems and services to join our team. Our ideal candidate has a background in billing systems, understands application design and development but also wants to participate in the deployment and operational phases of the SDLC. In this role, you will be working primarily with Kotlin.
This role reports to the IDC Director, Engineering.
Technologies we use:
- Backend: Kotlin, Java, Typescript
- RESTful APIs, gRPC
- AWS (EC2, S3, RDS, SQS)
- MySQL, DynamoDB, Redis
- Kubernetes, Ambassador, Helm
- AI Tooling: GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or similar enterprise AI assistants
What you will be doing:
- Contribute to the design and implementation of scalable, secure, and resilient payment processing systems. Work on integrations with payment networks, processors, and banking partners while applying strong engineering fundamentals.
- Write high-quality, maintainable and well-tested code in Kotlin/Java/Typescript. Tackle complex technical problems, participate in design discussions and contribute to improving system performance, scalability, and reliability.
- Provide input into architectural decisions, help break down complex requirements into manageable technical work and influence the technical direction of your team.
- Own and operate the services you build. Participate in on-call rotations, monitor production health, debug issues, and help improve availability, latency and overall system reliability. Drive improvements in observability, testing and automation.
- Support and mentor junior engineers through code reviews, pair programming and knowledge sharing. Help the team maintain high engineering standards and continuously improve.
- Leverage AI coding assistants (e.g., Cursor, Copilot, Gemini) to reduce boilerplate, accelerate feature delivery, and rapidly refactor or write new code patterns, while maintaining strict human review over logic and security.
What you should bring:
- 6+ years of professional software development experience, ideally in backend or distributed systems.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
- Proficiency in Kotlin, Java, or other JVM languages.
- Experience building large-scale, cloud-based applications — AWS and Kubernetes preferred.
- Strong knowledge of relational or NoSQL databases such as MySQL, DynamoDB, Redis.
- Experience working with RESTful or gRPC APIs.
- Solid understanding of testing strategies, CI/CD, and production debugging.
- A collaborative, inclusive and team-oriented mindset.
- A desire to continuously learn and master new technologies.
- A foundational understanding of how AI can enhance reliability, automation or developer experience is good to have
Who we are:

We’re looking for people who love working together because they know it makes us stronger, people who look to others and ask, “How can I help?” and then “How can we make this even better?” If you’re ready to roll up your sleeves and help parents raise a financially smart generation, apply to join our team.
